E/R: 10 excavators seized in anti-galamsey crackdown – Regional Minister discloses

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Adjei Awatey, announced the seizure of 10 excavators. This action targets illegal mining operators in the region. It is part of efforts to curb galamsey activities.

Galamsey has been a major environmental challenge in Ghana. It pollutes rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin. The activity also causes deforestation and destroys arable land. Additionally, it poses health risks to local communities.

Despite government crackdowns like Operation Vanguard and Galamstop, illegal mining persists. Economic hardship and weak enforcement contribute to this issue. Political interference and high gold prices also play a role.

On April 29, 2025, Minister Awatey spoke to journalists about these efforts. She emphasized the need for urgency in fighting galamsey. Protecting the environment is crucial for future development.

"We cannot achieve our goals without addressing illegal mining," she stated. "We have seized about 10 excavators as part of our operations."
