A lack of access to sanitary pads is affecting girls' education in Birim North Municipality. Many female students miss school during their menstrual periods.
Juliet Akyaa, the Municipal Girl Child Education Coordinator, noted this issue. She said the absence of free sanitary towels leads to increased absenteeism. This impacts girls' academic performance and overall well-being.
In response, two NGOs have stepped in to help. The Gibicts Centre for Community and Youth Development and the Ntiamoah Foundation donated over 200 cartons of sanitary pads. These will support female students across nine schools in the municipality.
Each girl will receive a six-month supply of pads. This initiative aims to reduce absenteeism and keep girls in school.
The donation coincides with activities for World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025. It seeks to empower girls by removing barriers to education during menstruation. NGO leaders urged teachers to distribute the pads fairly. They emphasized that responsible distribution is key to the initiative's success.
