E/R: Akyem Abaam residents appeal for support to complete maternity ward, decry poor road conditions

Residents of Akyem Abaam, a suburb of Akyem Kade, need help. They are calling on the government, philanthropists, and NGOs to assist with a maternity ward project. This project was started by the community.

Madam Ophelia Ampaw is the Assembly Member for the area. She expressed concern about maternal healthcare in Akyem Abaam. Pregnant women currently share rooms with women in labor due to no dedicated maternity ward. She described this situation as dire and undignified.

To raise funds for the maternity ward, the community has launched a homecoming festival called "Abaapem." This name translates to “Thousands of Canes.” The festival aims to gather financial support from residents at home and abroad.

“Our women deserve better,” Madam Ampaw stated. She emphasized that the community has begun this project but needs help to finish it. They are appealing for support from the government, NGOs, and kind-hearted individuals.

Residents also highlighted poor road conditions linking Akyem Kade to Abaam and Akyem Asuom. They said these bad roads hinder access to emergency healthcare, especially for pregnant women referred to facilities in Akyem Kade.

“The road is in terrible shape,” Madam Ampaw added. “It becomes a nightmare for vehicles during emergencies.” She urged the government to prioritize road construction for better mobility and access to essential services.

Local stakeholders echoed her concerns about infrastructure and healthcare facilities. They stressed that good infrastructure is vital for community development and well-being.

The people of Akyem Abaam remain hopeful their appeal will get attention. They wish their efforts will receive external support and government intervention.
