The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Fanteakwa South, Madam Mercy Korang, led an operation against illegal mining in Akyem Abompe.
This operation was done with the Osino Police Command. One suspect was arrested, and 16 water pumping machines were seized.
The one-day exercise is part of a national anti-galamsey campaign. This campaign supports President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to protect Ghana’s environment.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Rev. James Asante owns the illegal mining site. He is the founder of Great Change Ministry International and a local resident.
After the operation, Ms. Korang spoke to the media. She reiterated the Assembly’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining.
She stated that swift action would be taken against offenders, regardless of their status. "This operation should serve as a clear warning," she said.
"We will not sit idly while individuals destroy our lands and waters." Offenders will face strict legal consequences.
Ms. Korang reaffirmed her commitment to enforcing mining regulations. She aims to protect the environment for future generations.
She also called on traditional leaders and community members to help fight illegal mining. Collective responsibility is crucial for safeguarding natural resources and promoting sustainable development.
