Ahmed Nuhu, an excavator operator, has been arrested by the Ghana Police. He was caught by officials from the Akim Oda Forestry Commission. They found him engaging in illegal mining, known as galamsey, in the Apranum Forest.
Nuhu and others invaded the forest reserve near Asante Akyem on the Pra River. They used two excavators to degrade the forest. Acting on a tip-off, Richmond Amo-Adjei led a team to investigate.
They arrived just in time to catch Nuhu but not his accomplices. The others fled deeper into the forest. Amo-Adjei confirmed that they confiscated both excavators.
Nuhu has been handed over to Dwaso police for further investigation. They are working to apprehend those who escaped.
Amo-Adjei explained their actions during a community walk in Kade. They received information about illegal activities in the forest and went to verify it. Upon arrival, they discovered more people than expected.
The group had cleared two hectares of land and operated two excavators for mining. Nearby changfan operators alerted each other about their presence, but Nuhu was quickly arrested.
Amo-Adjei warned illegal miners operating in forest reserves to leave immediately.
