E/R: Joint Police-Military team arrests seven galamseyers

A team from the First Infantry Battalion and Eastern Regional Police has arrested seven illegal miners. They were destroying water bodies and degrading farmlands in the Eastern Region.

The operation was led by Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey. It took place in Akyem Kubriso, Lower West Akyem, Atewa West, Akyem Takyiman, Ayensuano, and Osino.

During the operation, the team confiscated several items. These included excavators, 16 water pumps, 24 excavator batteries, and a chainsaw machine. They also seized two pump action guns, three single barrel rifles, washing carpets, and a gold weighing scale.

After the operation on Saturday, April 12, Minister Awatey spoke to the media. She reaffirmed her commitment to stopping illegal mining known as galamsey in the region.

Madam Awatey warned illegal miners that her team will continue their efforts. They will also pursue those financing galamsey activities in the area.
