E/R Minister assures GWCL of quality raw water clampdown on galamsey intensifies

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey, is focused on water security. She aims to secure water bodies and provide clean sources for the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL). This will help ensure safe drinking water for the public.

To protect these water sources, the regional security council is acting against illegal mining. They have intensified efforts by seizing mining equipment like excavators and washing machines.

"We are committed to keeping our water clean," said the minister. "We formed a taskforce to lead this effort." She noted that they have impounded over 10 excavators from illegal miners in less than a week. The minister assured that these miners will face legal consequences.

Awatey shared this information during her visit to GWCL's regional office. She also toured facilities supplying water to Koforidua metropolis.

She praised GWCL staff for their dedication to providing potable water. Awatey called for better collaboration between GWCL and the Regional Coordinating Council. She urged management to improve accessibility, reliability, and quality of water supply.

Her visit included stops at Densuano old water works and the filter house treating raw water from Densu River. She also visited Spring Water facilities from Okume and Suhyen mountains before concluding at Bukunor Plant.

Ing. Paul Akpanya, Eastern Regional Chief Manager of GWCL, thanked the minister for her visit. He discussed company operations and efforts to increase production at Nsawam Water Treatment Plant. He also mentioned plans to supply water directly from Akorley Booster Station to the new Somanya Government Hospital and surrounding areas.
