E/R: Seized galamsey excavators deployed for emergency dredging in Koforidua

The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the use of seized galamsey excavators. This is for emergency dredging and desilting in New Juaben North and South Municipalities. The action follows severe flooding in Koforidua.

A heavy four-hour rainfall submerged many homes and shops. Areas affected include Nsukwao, Asokore, and Zongo. Important institutions like the Eastern Regional Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) were also impacted. The main road to the Eastern Regional National Fire Service Command was affected too.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey toured the hardest-hit communities. She was accompanied by officials from NADMO and Urban Roads. During her visit, she announced urgent steps to prevent further disaster.

She directed that seized galamsey excavators be used to clear blocked drains. "The REGSEC in the Western Region has seized some excavators from illegal miners," she said. "We will find fuel so we can start dredging immediately."

Assemblyman Freeman Kojo Gaan reported that 50 to 100 homes were affected in his area. He praised the minister’s quick response, saying, "About 50 or 100 houses have been destroyed." He expressed happiness with her leadership during this crisis.
