E/R: Seven-year-old drowns in galamsey pit at Akyem Abomosu; authorities launch clampdown on illegal mining

A tragic incident has occurred in Akyem Abomosu, Atiwa West District. A seven-year-old boy drowned in an abandoned illegal mining pit.

Eyewitnesses reported that the child slipped and fell into the water-filled pit. Despite residents' frantic rescue efforts, they could not save him.

This heartbreaking event prompted immediate action from authorities. Dr. Hannah Bissiw, Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, is leading a crackdown on illegal mining.

In an interview with Accra FM/CTV News, District Chief Executive Mr. Amo Johnson Anom condemned illegal mining operations. He stated that the Assembly will not tolerate such activities.

“This tragic loss is a wake-up call,” he said. “Illegal mining must stop; this operation warns those involved.” He emphasized that offenders will face legal consequences.

Mr. Amo Johnson urged traditional leaders and residents to support government efforts. He highlighted the need for unity to protect the environment and community future.

He noted that collective action is vital for district development and safety. Equipment seized during the operation has been given to Kwabeng Police Station for investigation.
