ECG Commissions Obuasi Bulk Supply Point to usher in reliable power supply

The town of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region celebrated a major event. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) commissioned the upgraded Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP).

This occasion brought excitement and hope to residents, especially business owners. Just two days before the commissioning, the town experienced power outages.

The new indoor station features two 20 MVA transformers. These replace the old single 10 MVA transformer. This upgrade significantly improves capacity and reliability.

Additionally, state-of-the-art 11 kV and 33 kV switching panels were installed. These enhancements ensure efficient and stable power distribution across Obuasi and nearby areas.

Ing. Frederick Kwabena Bediako is the General Manager for Special Projects at ECG. On March 19, 2025, he reflected on this rewarding journey with gratitude for its completion.

He noted that this initiative began about five years ago under a previous regime.

"Through hard work and commitment, we have realized a vision," he said. "Today, we celebrate improved power reliability for all in Obuasi."

He thanked the Sub-Transmission team, Head Office Projects team, and local workers from Obuasi and New Edubiase. He also recognized Lutton Engineering Services for their efforts in completing the project.

Ing. Bediako praised Ing. Daniel Mensah Asare and Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher for their leadership during this process.

He emphasized that commissioning the Obuasi BSP means more than just an upgrade. It promises stable, efficient power supply that fosters economic growth.

Businesses can now operate confidently, while households will enjoy better electricity services. This marks a step toward a more electrified and prosperous future for Obuasi.
