The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has promised better power supply. This improvement will focus on areas with high electricity demand.
William Boateng, the Director of Communications at ECG, spoke on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem. He explained that recent power outages were caused by several factors. These include storm damage and system malfunctions from strong winds.
Mr. Boateng mentioned that ECG often does not know about specific outages. They usually find out when a large area is affected or residents report it. Rainstorms can damage wires and cause outages. Strong winds can also trigger system malfunctions, leading to automatic shutdowns in certain areas.
To tackle these issues, ECG is hiring third-party contractors for help. They plan to install smaller transformers in overloaded areas. However, securing land for these transformers is difficult because residents are often unwilling to give up space.
“We are working hard to stabilize power,” Mr. Boateng said. “Investments have been made, and some areas need rehabilitation.” He assured that new transformers would be installed in high-load areas soon.
He also mentioned that ECG has submitted its budget to the Minister of Energy. This budget aims to support ongoing efforts to improve power distribution across the country.
“We are currently engaging contractors for small transformers,” he added. “However, finding suitable locations has been challenging due to property owner reluctance.” Mr. Boateng expects new transformers in high-demand areas soon.
Additionally, he noted that they are working on stabilizing existing lighting systems as well. Some of these systems require rehabilitation too.
