ECG calls for stronger measures to deal with illegal meters

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) wants stronger regulations. They aim to stop unauthorized electricity meters and illegal connections. These issues hurt the company’s revenue and efficiency.

Mr. George Amoah, General Manager of ECG Ashanti West, made this call. He spoke during a visit from Dr. Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).

Mr. Amoah pointed out that the current law, Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2413), is weak. It does not give ECG exclusive rights to import electricity meters.

He said this regulatory gap allows fake meters to be imported and sold. This situation increases ECG's losses significantly.

Mr. Amoah urged PURC to collaborate with the Energy Commission. They should strengthen the law and punish those who install fake meters. He also called for criminalizing illegal connections.
