The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama's promise. He assured that his government will not privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
President Mahama made this statement during the May Day celebrations. This event took place on Thursday, April 1, 2025, at Black Star Square.
On Friday, April 2, PUWU General Secretary Timothy Nyame spoke on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News. He expressed the union’s gratitude for the President's commitment to public control of ECG.
Nyame stated that ECG has the technical capacity and skilled workforce needed. He emphasized that effective leadership is crucial for success.
He said, “They should appoint competent leaders who can crack the whip.” He believes trained workers at ECG can improve the sector with presidential support.
Nyame mentioned that the union has submitted proposals to address ECG’s challenges. He reiterated the need for strong and accountable leadership.
He also highlighted PUWU’s long-standing opposition to privatisation of ECG. The union is dedicated to protecting both workers and public interest.
“The union has not been quiet,” he said. “We’re trying to find ways to improve our situation.”
Nyame added that they are Ghanaians thinking in the country's best interest. He stressed that ECG does not need privatisation to perform well.
