ECG faces Parliament today over power supply challenges

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will meet the Energy Committee today. This meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2025. They will discuss financial challenges facing the company.

Energy Minister John Jinapor mentioned a Ghc2 billion monthly funding deficit. This deficit mainly results from ECG's shortfall in revenue collection. ECG management is expected to address these issues during the session.

Emmanuel Bedzrah, Chairman of the Energy Committee, spoke to Citi News about the meeting. He said they are engaging with various groups in the power sector. The goal is to identify the source of challenges within the energy sector.

"We will review their work, plans, and vision for the sector," he stated. "They are responsible for distributing power." Currently, they are meeting with generators and met with transmitters yesterday.

"Everyone knows ECG brings power into homes," Bedzrah continued. "They need to explain why we lack power." The generators claim they have enough capacity. However, financing issues may be at play.

As final distributors, ECG receives funds from customers and pays others. Therefore, they must clarify their problems during this meeting.
