ECG is not for sale – John Jinapor

Energy Minister John Jinapor has refuted claims that the government intends to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), clarifying that the focus is on private sector participation to enhance efficiency.

Speaking during a visit to the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema, Jinapor described the reports as misleading, emphasizing that ECG remains state-owned. However, he stressed the need for reforms to improve financial sustainability and service delivery.

“The reports suggesting that ECG is up for sale are completely false. We are looking at private sector involvement to boost efficiency, reduce losses, and strengthen revenue generation,” he stated.

Jinapor also highlighted the financial strain in the energy sector, lamenting that development funds are being diverted to settle debts owed to energy suppliers, including WAPCo and N-Gas.

“The Finance Ministry should not have to divert taxpayer money meant for roads, hospitals, and infrastructure to pay off energy debts. But due to the current situation, we are forced to allocate $75 million to N-Gas,” he noted.

With mounting challenges in the sector, the government insists that structural reforms are essential to sustain ECG while ensuring that public interest remains a priority.
