ECG never had custody of missing containers – Dubik Mahama

Samuel Dubik Mahama, former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has addressed the issue of missing containers. Over 1,300 ECG containers disappeared at the Tema Port.

On the Citi Breakfast Show, Mahama stated that ECG never had custody of these containers. He believes it is unfair to blame ECG for their disappearance.

He explained, “The containers were never in the custody of the ECG.” He added that since they were under port authorities, ECG should not be held responsible. Mahama is open to investigations and willing to share his side.

The missing containers have led to an investigation into irregularities in ECG’s procurement processes. Before 2022, ECG had a dedicated fund for clearing shipments but stopped due to financial issues.

Despite these challenges, ECG awarded contracts to two firms for container clearance. One firm was pre-financed by ECG.

Concerns have been raised about one firm's legitimacy. It reportedly lacked the necessary license for such contracts, suggesting possible procurement violations.

Additionally, it was found that ECG's procurement directorate merged with its Housing and Estate unit. The Director of Procurement had no prior experience in this field and was not part of any professional body.
