ECG privatisation will hike tariffs, cost jobs – TUC warns

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) opposes privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). They warn this could lead to high electricity tariffs and mass layoffs.

The TUC believes ECG's financial issues stem from political interference. They highlighted problems like political meter distribution and take-or-pay contracts. Frequent changes in leadership and board appointments also contribute to these struggles. Additionally, meddling in procurement processes undermines ECG’s performance.

At a press conference in Accra on April 10, General Secretary Timothy Nyame spoke about these challenges. He stated that ECG could succeed if these issues are addressed properly.

The TUC warned that privatization would harm both workers and consumers. They emphasized that ECG is a vital national asset for Ghana's development. It plays a key role in ensuring energy security and social equity.

While acknowledging significant challenges, the TUC argues that privatization is not a sustainable solution.
