The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has started a 100-day maintenance exercise. This will focus on power lines in the Ashanti Region.
The goal is to ensure stable power supply during storms.
ECG is also increasing efforts against scrap dealers and power thieves. These activities disrupt electricity supply across the region.
Vandalism and theft of ECG installations are rising in Ashanti. Recently, a theft at the Adoato Substation led to one death.
Ing. George Amoah manages the Ashanti West Region for ECG. He highlighted how illegal activities hurt the company’s operations.
He said, “We need money to keep everything running smoothly.” He explained that they buy transformers, poles, and conductors with this money.
“If we steal, we won’t have funds,” he added. He noted that theft affects both the company and the nation.
As the rainy season approaches, vandalized installations pose safety risks. They could lead to power fluctuations in the region.
Alhaji Luqman Mohammed Nuhu Apiedu chairs the Ghana Association of Garages in Ashanti. He spoke about challenges in addressing theft issues.
He said, “Scrap dealers threaten those who report illegal sales.” This fear prevents many from reporting such crimes.
To maintain stable power supply, ECG is conducting preventive maintenance on critical installations throughout the region.
