ECOWAS has worked well for us, despite its huge setback - Emmanuel Bombande

Former Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Emmanuel Bombande praised ECOWAS. He highlighted its role in regional stability and integration. Despite challenges, ECOWAS has been vital for West Africa.

Speaking on JoyNews' NewsDesk, Mr. Bombande noted ECOWAS's importance over the decades. He said it has significantly contributed to political and economic development.

“ECOWAS has worked well for us as a West African region,” he stated. He pointed out that the organization's formation reflects its growth over time.

Initially, ECOWAS focused on promoting trade and commerce among member states. However, widespread instability forced a change in priorities.

Mr. Bombande explained that integration could not solely revolve around trade. This realization led to revising the ECOWAS Treaty in 1993.

He described this revision as a pivotal moment for the bloc. It allowed ECOWAS to respond proactively to regional destabilization.

“ECOWAS has worked for us,” he said, “but we face significant setbacks.”
