The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will not impose sanctions on Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. This follows their formal exit from the regional bloc.
Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, shared this news. He spoke during a donation event at the Dzorwulu Special School. This event marked ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary.
Ambassador Gana stated that security challenges in West Africa need collaboration. He emphasized that punitive measures are not the solution. “We must work together to tackle pressing security issues,” he said.
He expressed hope that the three nations would reconsider their decision. Ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to maintain ties with them.
“President Mahama has sent an envoy for dialogue,” Ambassador Gana noted. He added that last week, the ECOWAS Commission President met with Foreign Ministers from those countries.
Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger are led by military juntas. They formed the Alliance of Sahel States after military coups occurred in each country. Despite diplomatic efforts over the past year, they officially withdrew from ECOWAS earlier this year.
Ambassador Gana highlighted that ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary is a time for reflection. He urged the region to build on its achievements and focus on integration.
As part of the celebrations, ECOWAS donated items to Dzorwulu Special School. These included food items, bags of water, beverages, and toiletries.
