ECOWAS was a failure, disaster with regards to coups – Prof. Anning

Security consultant, Professor Kwesi Aning, has described the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as a failure and disaster in handling coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

“Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have all undergone coup plots, discarding their democratic principles and now operating under military or revolutionary governance.

ECOWAS has expelled these countries, but they will be compelled to rejoin if they return to democratic rule,” Prof. Aning stated on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei.

He accused former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of sabotaging Burkina Faso for personal gains, highlighting allegations of compromising Burkina Faso’s interests by favoring U.S. involvement.

Prof. Aning also criticized Ghana and Nigeria as observers, claiming their actions, particularly Ghana’s leadership of the Accra Initiative, have led to mistrust and disappointment in the region.

“The presence of Burkina Faso’s military president and representatives from other military-led states at John Mahama’s inauguration symbolizes their willingness to rejoin ECOWAS,” he added.
