EPA's capacity alone can't match galamsey fight - Prof Browne Klutse urges collaboration

Professor Browne Klutse has expressed concerns regarding the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ability to effectively combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as "galamsey." According to him, the agency currently lacks the necessary resources and capacity to address this pressing issue adequately. During a recent discussion, he highlighted that despite the government's ongoing efforts to tackle illegal mining activities, the EPA is constrained by insufficient personnel and tools needed for comprehensive monitoring and enforcement.

He emphasized that without a significant increase in support for the EPA, including funding and training for its staff, any initiatives aimed at curbing galamsey would likely fall short. The professor called for a more robust framework that not only strengthens the EPA but also fosters collaboration between various stakeholders involved in environmental management. His remarks underscore an urgent need for strategic investment in regulatory bodies if Ghana hopes to successfully mitigate the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining practices. This call to action reflects broader concerns about sustainable development and environmental protection in the face of growing industrial pressures.
