Ebi Bright's communication team has responded to calls from youth groups in Tema. These groups want President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a local as the next Metropolitan Chief Executive. The Tema Traditional Council has also supported these demands.
Public demonstrations have occurred, including burning tyres at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly. Protesters argue that only a native can address the community’s unique concerns and preserve its culture.
In their statement, Ebi Bright’s team denied claims about her lack of local ties. They highlighted her strong cultural and familial connections to the Ga-Adangbe people and Tema community.
The statement clarified that some falsely claimed she is not Ghanaian. Ebi Bright is Ghanaian by birth and heritage on both sides of her family. Her mother is Ga-Adangbe, and her paternal grandmother is also from this group.
Her family lineage includes a notable Anlo-Ewe family from Anyako in the Volta Region. The team emphasized that Ebi Bright's upbringing in Tema gives her insight into the community's needs.
"Ebi Bright is a proud Ga-Adangbe woman," they stated. Her roots connect deeply with Tema's values and identity. Any attempt to question her identity is unjust and insults Ghanaian heritage.
The youth groups have made it clear: "We don’t want Ebi Bright as mayor."
