The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, inaugurated the Governing Council of the University of Ghana on Friday, April 25. The event took place in Accra.
The council has 18 members and is chaired by Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew. The minister tasked them with promoting educational and infrastructure development policies for the university.
During the inauguration, Iddrisu announced plans for a National Research Fund. This fund will support universities in conducting research to boost Ghana’s growth.
He stated that the president aims to operationalize this fund this year. An amount of GHC50 million has been allocated for its launch.
Iddrisu emphasized the need for public-private partnerships. These partnerships will help expand academic and residential infrastructure at the university. This expansion is crucial to accommodate more students.
In related news, the World Bank has cut Ghana’s 2025 growth forecast to 3.9%.
