The Ministry of Education has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to ensure accountability from public universities. They must report on how they use their internally generated funds (IGFs).
The Ministry believes it is urgent to assess these funds. They want to see how IGFs contribute to quality education and infrastructure development.
At the opening of the Dr. Paul Effah Conference Hall, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu spoke about this issue. He stressed that while the government supports public universities, these institutions must use their revenues wisely.
"We need to examine how universities utilize their IGF," he said. "This should benefit access to quality higher education, especially for residential halls and lecture theatres."
The Minister also asked GTEC to create a plan for polytechnics in every region. He noted that these polytechnics would help students gain practical skills for the job market.
"Shouldn't we have a polytechnic in each region?" he questioned. "This would link senior high school and university education."
He urged GTEC to consider improving industry connections as well. The goal is to expand access to higher education while focusing on employability.
The government aims for a polytechnic in each of Ghana's 16 regions. This initiative will enhance access and prepare students for the workforce effectively.
