Education Minister tasks new ICAG governing council to help tackle corruption

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, addressed the new Governing Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG). He urged them to actively fight corruption. This includes exposing financial leakages, over-invoicing, and under-invoicing.

During the inauguration on Tuesday in Accra, he emphasized accountants' vital role. They help identify financial irregularities and promote accountability in public finances. “You are stewards of transparency and responsiveness,” he stated.

Iddrisu specifically asked the Council to reveal corrupt practices. “Over-invoicing and under-invoicing can only be exposed by you,” he said. He stressed that this work is essential for ensuring value for money for taxpayers.

He reminded the Council that integrity must define their work. “Integrity is not optional; it is crucial,” he noted. He encouraged them to lead with integrity and practice what they preach.

The Minister also urged ICAG to raise its public profile. He said their work should be more visible in discussions about transparency. “It’s time to publicize much of what you do,” he added.

He highlighted the need for public education and engagement. The Council should participate more in national discussions on these issues. “You may have to engage stakeholders and educate the public more,” he suggested.

Iddrisu expressed hope that ICAG would lead discussions on fighting corruption. He encouraged them to present papers on governance reforms. “I look forward to a day when you discuss accountants’ roles in combating corruption,” he said.

Finally, he called on the Council to enforce professional standards firmly. “You must uphold and enforce standards without compromise,” he emphasized.
