Education Minister to introduce bill to reverse names of universities Akufo-Addo renamed

The government is considering changing university names back to their originals.

This follows changes made by the previous administration.

Engagements are ongoing with traditional authorities, alumni, and students.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced this in Accra.

He spoke at the inauguration of the Dr Abdulai Salifu Technical University’s Governing Council.

Mr. Iddrisu plans to introduce a bill in Parliament for renaming universities.

He stated there will be a policy shift regarding university names.

This change does not aim to undermine anyone's contributions or legacy.

However, those deserving national honors will retain them.

Dr Abdulai Salifu Technical University will revert to Tamale Technical University.

Other universities like C.K. Tedam and SSD-UBIDS will also be renamed.

The minister urged the council to resolve conflicts at Tamale Technical University.

He noted that the university has faced many strikes due to stakeholder differences.

Mr. Iddrisu recalled that T-Poly was once a top polytechnic in Ghana.

He encouraged the council to enhance its reputation in engineering and vocational education.

The President’s 24-hour economy needs institutions like Tamale Technical University.

These institutions should produce entrepreneurs who can create businesses independently.

Addressing unemployment requires improving employability through technical education.

Vocational education is important to the Ministry of Education, he added.

Mr. Iddrisu is working on establishing a technical vocational education fund under President Mahama's government.

He emphasized that a successful economy should be led by the private sector.

The government must provide an enabling environment for success.

“We will prioritize your infrastructure needs,” he said about new universities.

This year, GETFund will provide seed money for newly established universities.
