The Ghana TVET Service (GTVETS) is rebranding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Ghana. A planning committee for National TVET Week 2025 has been inaugurated. The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, commissioned the 14-member committee on June 4, 2024.
In his speech, Iddrisu emphasized the committee's important role. He urged members to act as ambassadors for TVET. They should mobilize resources and build partnerships to promote TVET as a top choice for youth.
Iddrisu highlighted the need for public engagement and collaboration between industry and academia. This will help address skills mismatches in the workforce. He also stressed the importance of sustainable funding for long-term TVET initiatives.
To support this, he proposed creating a dedicated TVET Fund. This fund would finance key programs like the National Apprenticeship Programme and improve infrastructure nationwide. Additionally, President John Dramani Mahama approved nine abandoned projects under the Planet One Initiative.
More funding is expected from Italy to enhance TVET projects across Ghana. National TVET Week 2025 aims to showcase the benefits of TVET. It will highlight its role in economic growth and youth empowerment.
The campaign launches on July 15, 2025, coinciding with World Youth Skills Day. It will culminate in a week-long celebration in November. Abdul Fatah Maigah Mahama from GTVETS noted that these events aim to change misconceptions about TVET.
He stated that skills training is crucial for developing a capable workforce. It helps solve problems, create jobs, and contribute to national development. National TVET Week will showcase innovative work from institutions and celebrate learners' skills.
Nana Ama Mensah chairs the committee and expressed her commitment to this initiative. She aims to transform TVET into a first-choice pathway for Ghana’s youth. Committee members include various experts who will ensure successful event coordination.
The Ghana TVET Service was established under the Pre-Tertiary Education Act 2020 (Act 1049). It manages national policies related to pre-tertiary technical and vocational education training. This legislation consolidated all previous technical programs under one authority—the Ghana TVET Service—covering both formal and informal providers across the country.
