Effective leadership behind Cedi's gain - Mahama reponds to Bawumia

President John Dramani Mahama believes the Ghanaian cedi's recent appreciation is due to effective leadership. He countered former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's claims that the current administration lacks policies affecting the currency.

On May 23, President Mahama spoke to clergy members. He emphasized that stabilizing the economy and reducing hardship results from deliberate leadership choices.

“Somebody says, point to one policy that you have implemented to make the cedi appreciate,” he said. “It’s not about one policy. The answer is effective leadership.”

He added, “With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around.” He expressed his commitment to creating a better life for Ghanaians.

Former Vice President Bawumia dismissed any credit for the cedi's gains going to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He argued that the NDC government has not implemented any policies contributing to currency performance.

Bawumia noted that the NDC had just passed its budget. They had not undertaken significant expenditures or projects influencing currency appreciation.

In response, President Mahama highlighted leadership's role in restoring public confidence and driving economic recovery.

“Ghanaians had bought into the message,” he said. “They believed I could reset things and build their confidence in democracy again.”

He continued, “Every step I've taken is meant to restore faith in our democracy.” He aims to lead differently than past administrations.

The President committed to setting a governance standard for future administrations.

“By the time we finish these four years,” he stated, “we will set such a standard that no party can reverse our gains.”
