President John Dramani Mahama has responded to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He stated that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi is due to effective leadership. This response came after Dr. Bawumia questioned the NDC's claims about the cedi's performance.
Dr. Bawumia spoke at a Young Executive Forum (YEF) event in London. He challenged the NDC to identify a specific policy that improved the cedi’s value. He attributed the currency’s stability to legacy initiatives, like the NPP's gold purchase program.
In a meeting with clergy on May 23, President Mahama rejected this idea. He argued that no single policy could explain the cedi’s gains. Instead, he emphasized the importance of leadership and governance.
Mahama said, “Somebody says, point to one policy... I said one policy? It’s not about one policy.” He highlighted that macroeconomic stability comes from good governance and fiscal discipline.
He expressed confidence in turning around the economy for better living conditions. “With effective leadership, we can create a better life for our people,” he stated.
The president also promised to sustain gains made during his leadership beyond his current term. He aims to set standards in government that future leaders cannot reverse.
