This year, World Menstrual Health Day is being observed globally. In the Western Region, the Chief Executive of Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipality distributed about 300 sanitary pads. These pads were given to adolescent female students from local schools.
On May 28, MCE Abdul-Majeed Dokurigu spoke to Channel One News. He attended a sensitisation programme organized by the Effia-Kwesimintsim Municipal Education Directorate. He urged students to take their hygiene seriously.
Dokurigu said this distribution fulfills the government’s promise. The goal is to support menstruating girls in staying clean and healthy. He also announced plans to distribute over 2,000 more sanitary pads this month.
He encouraged students to respect their parents and teachers. “Be the change we want to see in society,” he said. The government is committed to providing free sanitary pads for all adolescents.
The programme covered 300 students today, with more planned for tomorrow. They aim to reach every student through ongoing sensitisation efforts.
Emelia Kpodo, a Health Promotion Officer at EKMA Health Directorate, led the sensitisation session. She emphasized essential hygiene practices for menstruating girls. Kpodo urged strict adherence to these practices to avoid infections.
She advised against using Dettol for washing private parts during menstruation. Students should change pads regularly and wash hands before and after changing them. Regular bathing is also important.
The event included education on proper use and disposal of menstrual pads.
