Effia MP demands closure of scholarship secretariat amid student unrest

Isaac Boamah Nyarko, the MP for Effia, wants to dissolve the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat. He believes it no longer supports students effectively.

His comments come as frustration grows among Ghanaian students abroad. Many are unhappy with how the government handles their scholarships.

Nyarko stated, “We do not need a scholarship secretariat today.” He suggested that scholarships could be managed locally or regionally instead. This would remove political influence from the process.

He made these remarks on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV. His statements reflect widespread criticism of the Scholarship Secretariat's management of stipends and allowances.

The Coalition of Ghanaian Scholars Abroad plans a demonstration on June 4, 2025. They protest what they call "government neglect."

In a statement on May 19, they noted some students haven't received stipends for 14 months. Additionally, book and health allowances have gone unpaid for two academic years.

Coalition representatives from Europe, North America, and Asia accuse the government of ignoring their plight. They have made repeated appeals for help without success.

Boamah Nyarko believes decentralizing scholarship administration is essential. He argues that removing political influence will improve efficiency and fairness for deserving students.
