The Effutu Municipality in the Central Region is facing a rise in HIV and hepatitis B infections.
In 2023, the Municipal Directorate of Health Services reported 170 new HIV cases. Some individuals have started treatment with antiretroviral therapy. However, others have refused medical management after testing positive.
Paulette Brown, the Municipal Director of Health, spoke to Citi News. She noted that many people do not know their HIV status. Some who get tested may avoid follow-up care.
Brown attributed the increase in HIV cases to many sexually active individuals. This is especially true among students in the area.
Since 2019, there have been 1,016 positive hepatitis B cases reported. The Health Director suggested a link between HIV and hepatitis B infections. Both can spread through similar transmission routes and risky behaviors.
To combat these infections, health authorities are calling for stronger community engagement. They emphasize the need for intensified public education campaigns. Residents, particularly students, should avoid unprotected sex and multiple partners.
