The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed eight new monkeypox cases. This raises concerns about the spread of the disease in the country.
Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, a public health physician at GHS, shared this news on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on May 23. He stated that there are now eight confirmed cases this year. Earlier, there was one case that was quickly contained.
This current outbreak has affected two regions: Greater Accra and Western. Each region has reported four cases so far.
The GHS has investigated over 100 suspected monkeypox cases nationwide. All 16 regions have reported suspected infections, but only Greater Accra and Western have confirmed cases.
Dr. Laryea emphasized the importance of their surveillance system. It helps identify and respond to suspected cases before they are confirmed.
Monkeypox spreads through close contact with infected people or animals. Symptoms include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, headache, and fatigue.
In response to the outbreak, the GHS urges the public to take preventive measures seriously. These include regular hand hygiene and avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals.
People should report any suspected cases to nearby health facilities immediately. Health authorities are on high alert and increasing public education efforts across all regions to prevent further spread of the disease.
