Ejisu-Abenase queenmother calls for comprehensive diaspora integration policies at UN Forum

Nana Akosua Serwaa Seoyo I, also known as Ms. Shannan Akosua Magee, is the queenmother of Ejisu-Abenase in the Ashanti Region. She has called for a comprehensive policy across Africa. This policy would help the African diaspora return and integrate smoothly.

She believes this is essential for welcoming people of African descent. It will help them settle into society easily. “This is crucial for healing and fostering belonging,” she said.

Her call aligns with Malcolm X's message from 1964. He urged African nations to protect their sovereignty and support the global diaspora. As we approach Malcolm X's 100th birthday in 2025, his legacy inspires unity among people of African descent.

Nana Akosua spoke at the Fourth Session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. The event took place at the UN General Assembly in New York. She represented Ghanaian traditional leadership and the global diaspora community.

She highlighted the importance of the “Year of Return” initiative. This initiative reconnects Africa with its diaspora. While symbolic gestures are meaningful, practical policies must follow.

“The right to return should be prioritized and enshrined in our constitutions,” she stressed. It should remain central to our conversations and agenda.

Her comments reflect goals of the International Decade for People of African Descent (2015–2024). This UN initiative focuses on recognition, justice, and development for people of African heritage worldwide.

“My call to action reminds us that our momentum must not fade,” she stated. African countries should work with diaspora communities to create inclusive policies that honor shared history and drive sustainable development.
