Election 2024: 2.1 million NPP supporters didn’t vote – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a 2024 presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He believes the party lost the recent elections due to low voter turnout.

During the NPP’s “Thank You” tour on April 23, he spoke at the party headquarters in Accra. Dr. Bawumia noted that about 2.1 million party supporters did not vote. He thinks this significantly contributed to their defeat.

He stated, “Despite our hard work, we suffered a heavy loss.” He emphasized that many supporters stayed home instead of voting. This lack of participation was a key reason for their election loss.

The 2024 presidential election took place on December 7. It featured a close race between Dr. Bawumia and John Dramani Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

On December 9, the Electoral Commission declared Mahama the winner. He received 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of valid ballots cast. In contrast, Dr. Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, which is 41.61%.

Mahama's victory also marked a significant win for the NDC in Parliament. This result solidified their return to power after previous losses.
