Election 2024: Bawumia attributes NPP’s defeat to voter apathy in six regions

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is also a former Vice President.

During a recent tour in the Ahafo Region, he spoke about voter apathy. He identified six regions where this was a major issue. These regions are Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Bono, and Central.

Bawumia noted that many people abstained from voting in these areas. He emphasized the need for the party to address this problem urgently.

He provided specific numbers for each region:
- Greater Accra: 571,000 abstentions
- Ashanti: 489,000
- Eastern: 258,000
- Central: 230,000
- Western: 164,000
- Bono: 100,000

“These six regions were our problem,” he said. “They are also our strongholds.” He believes the outcome would have been different if more people had voted.

Bawumia also mentioned other factors that contributed to their defeat. These include arrogance of power and high living costs. Additionally, he pointed out issues like government reshuffles and the E-Levy policy.
