Election of new Pope is a spiritual, not political process – Bishop John Louis

Auxiliary Bishop John Kobina Louis of the Archdiocese of Accra has spoken about the papal election process. He emphasized that it is a spiritual exercise, not political. His comments follow the death of Pope Francis. The Catholic Church is now preparing for the papal conclave.

This conclave involves 135 cardinals who will select the next pope. Bishop Louis shared his thoughts on Channel One Newsroom on April 21. He noted that while cardinals vote, their decision is guided by the Holy Spirit.

The bishop explained that the conclave is rooted in faith, not politics. The Church seeks divine guidance in choosing its leader. "This is not a political election," he stated.

He added that God chooses among the cardinals meeting in Rome after the funeral. These cardinals will pray together before making their choice. They will first conduct a straw ballot to identify potential candidates.

As some names emerge, they become finalists for voting. The process continues until two-thirds of cardinals agree on one candidate. "We do not know who God's choice is," he said, urging continued prayer.

Additionally, Catholic bishops plan to hold a national memorial mass for Pope Francis.
