The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, announced a new policy. All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must budget for their electricity use.
Jinapor spoke during a meeting with the Energy Committee on May 15. He said this directive aims to improve accountability in public power consumption.
“All MDAs must pay their electricity bills,” he stated. This includes health, education, security agencies, and the presidency.
However, some critical services will be exempt from this rule. In healthcare, laboratories, theatres, and wards are excluded. In education, dormitories and restaurants are not included; only lecture halls are affected.
Jinapor mentioned that these exemptions await parliamentary approval for publication.
Additionally, the Ministry needs GHS 1.1 billion to buy liquid fuel for electricity generation.
He noted that current fuel stocks last only 2.6 days. This highlights the urgent need for more supplies.
This announcement comes amid ongoing power challenges in the country. The Ministry is committed to sustainable power management and reducing state-funded utility subsidies gradually.
