Electricity sector showing positive signs – John Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, reports improvements in the electricity sector.

He stated that the country’s power supply is stabilizing. This was shared during an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on June 4. He discussed the new fuel levy during this conversation.

Mr. Jinapor noted that Independent Power Producers are receiving about 70% of their payments. He mentioned that losses in the sector are decreasing as well. The Electricity Company of Ghana is now more disciplined with its spending.

He attributed these positive changes to strategic government interventions made recently.

His comments come after the introduction of a GH¢1.00 fuel levy. This decision has faced criticism, especially from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, Mr. Jinapor defends it as necessary for addressing financial deficits in energy.

He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring stable electricity supply. The new levy will help support the long-term health of the energy sector.
