The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs and a 4.02% rise in water tariffs, effective May 3, 2025.

The adjustments come after the Commission’s quarterly review, influenced by factors like inflation, the cedi-to-dollar exchange rate, the hydro-thermal energy mix, and the cost of natural gas.

Additionally, 50% of a GHS976 million revenue shortfall from 2024 will be factored into the new rates, with the remainder addressed in future adjustments.

PURC stressed the need for these changes to ensure the financial sustainability of utility companies, which are grappling with under-recovery challenges.

However, the Commission has carefully calibrated the increases to reduce the burden on consumers amidst ongoing economic hardships.
