Electricity and Water Tariffs to Increase in Ghana
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced new tariffs.
Starting May 3, 2025, electricity rates will rise by 14.75%. Water tariffs will increase by 4.02%.
This adjustment follows the quarterly tariff review for early 2025. The review aims to ensure revenue stability for utility providers.
The commission considers several factors for these changes. These include the exchange rate of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar, inflation projections, and fuel costs.
Additionally, there is a need to recover GHS976 million in outstanding revenue from previous quarters in 2024. This repayment obligation significantly influenced the tariff increase.
To ease consumer burden, half of this amount will be spread over future quarters in 2025.
The PURC stated that these increases are necessary to prevent service disruptions. They aim to balance the needs of consumers and utility companies amid economic pressures.
