Every stall in Accra's Kantamanto Market will get safe electricity. This is part of a redevelopment plan. The goal is to reduce fire risks and improve working conditions for traders.
The announcement was made at a town hall meeting on April 15, 2025. It took place at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). Stakeholders included market authorities, technicians, and development partners.
Branson Skinner, co-founder of The Or Foundation, spoke about the project. He said, “We want to create a safer environment for all traders.” He added that equal access to electricity is vital for vendors. They need it for fans, phone charging, and daily operations.
The AMA pledged full support for the project. They emphasized that the land is government property. No private organization can purchase it.
Deputy AMA boss Mantey stated, “Kantamanto is government land; no NGO can buy it.” He mentioned plans to deploy security personnel for safety in the market.
Market Manager Atta Manu discussed the project's technical demands. He noted that careful planning will be crucial for success. “We need technicians to map out the entire system,” he said. Once work begins, any substandard wiring will be replaced to prevent fires.
