In a compelling speech, Ghanaian business leader Sir Sam Jonah addressed the youth. He emphasized that true leadership requires embracing both failure and success with humility.
Sir Sam spoke at Academic City University's commencement on June 7, 2025. He is the Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, an equity fund in Johannesburg. He argued that failure is not the opposite of achievement but often leads to it.
He began by highlighting the importance of discussing failure. "There’s something we don’t talk about enough: The F word: Failure," he said. This statement captured the audience's attention immediately.
As Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, he reassured aspiring leaders. "Failure is part of the journey," he stated. Every admired leader has faced setbacks, and every thriving company has encountered challenges.
Sir Sam passionately redefined failure: "It is not the opposite of success." He explained that failure can be a pathway to success.
To illustrate his point, he referenced famous figures who faced setbacks. He quoted basketball legend Michael Jordan: "I have failed over and over again in my life." Jordan was cut from his high school team and missed many shots but won six NBA championships.
He also mentioned Winston Churchill's wisdom: "Success is not final; failure is not fatal." Churchill faced political defeats yet led Britain during World War II.
Other examples included Steve Jobs and J.K. Rowling. Jobs was fired from Apple before returning successfully. Rowling's "Harry Potter" was rejected by twelve publishers before becoming a hit.
Transitioning to success, Sir Sam advised graduates to remain humble. "When you do succeed — wear your success lightly," he urged them.
He warned against arrogance that often comes with success. "Do not become arrogant or look down on others," he cautioned. Staying grounded and connected is essential for true leadership.
He concluded with a powerful message about resilience: "What matters is not whether you fall — but whether you pick yourself up." Rising again with insight, resilience, and humility defines true leadership for Sir Sam Jonah.
