Encroachment on waterways caused Sunday floods – Hydrological Authority

The Ghana Hydrological Authority has found illegal structures on waterways. These structures are a major cause of flooding in Accra.

Richard Amekor, the Director of Drains at the Authority, shared their findings. Unapproved construction has blocked natural drainage paths. This worsened the impact of Sunday’s heavy rains.

Amekor noted many illegal buildings are on wetlands and water bodies. He emphasized that these issues contributed to the flooding in Accra.

He stressed the need for urgent action as the rainy season peaks. He echoed President John Mahama's call to remove obstructive structures.

The President mentioned that buildings near drains will be demolished. This is necessary to allow water to flow during rains.

Amekor advised residents in affected areas to relocate. He said they should not live in these dangerous places.

For instance, people are building in the Weija estuary, which is wrong. When it rains, water will flood into their homes.

He concluded by stating it is time to control development better.
