Jennifer Oforiwa Queen, the Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, made a bold claim. She accused Energy Minister John Jinapor of advertising dumsor. She believes this empowers armed robbers.
Oforiwa Queen stated that Jinapor's comments on electricity issues aid criminal activity. She argued that his repeated statements serve as warnings for robbers to plan attacks.
Speaking on Movement TV, she said, “Today when they want to put off the light, they advertise it to armed robbers.” She added, “John Jinapor is advertising dumsor to empower armed robbers.”
Her remarks followed Jinapor’s call for calm regarding potential power crises in Ghana. He addressed Parliament's Energy Committee and mentioned financial challenges.
Jinapor explained that $1.1 billion is needed for liquid fuel procurement. He noted that this cost isn't included in the tariff structure. The government faces a debt of over $400 million to Karpower and $1.7 billion to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
He highlighted a monthly deficit of about 2 billion cedis in ECG collections. This situation adds to the overall financial burden on the energy sector.
On Citi Eyewitness News, Jinapor clarified the current power situation. He announced that 450,000 barrels of light crude oil are arriving this weekend.
He reassured listeners about fuel stock levels, stating there are 2.6 days' worth available. With new supplies coming in, he urged people not to panic about a looming power crisis.
