The Minister for Energy and Green Transitions, John Abdulai Jinapor, announced a criminal investigation. This investigation will focus on the disappearance of over 1,300 containers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Harbour.
Mr. Jinapor shared this information in a Facebook post on Thursday, March 26. He provided details from an investigative report regarding the missing containers.
During the transition process, the outgoing NPP administration stated that about 3,000 ECG containers were at Tema Harbour. These containers were not cleared due to issues with the company. However, after taking office, Mr. Jinapor found only 2,500 containers at the port.
These containers had accumulated a demurrage cost of GHS 1,500,000,000. The difference in these figures prompted him to form an investigative committee. This committee was tasked with verifying what happened to the containers.
“The committee’s report confirmed that over 1,300 containers are missing,” Mr. Jinapor said. This contradicted what the previous administration had reported.
He described these findings as very concerning and stressed the need for accountability. “Criminal investigations will be launched immediately,” he declared. He assured that those responsible would be prosecuted.
This revelation has raised serious concerns about transparency and procurement practices within ECG.
