Energy and Green Transition Minister receives advisory report on private sector role in power distribution

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has received a report. This report was compiled by a technical committee formed in January 2025. The committee evaluated private sector participation in power distribution.

The document aims to guide future government policies and strategies. It could signal a major shift in managing the power distribution sector.

The report was officially handed over during a ceremony at the Ministry of Energy. It includes detailed assessments and recommendations for private sector involvement.

Three key options are outlined: Entity Concession, Multiple Lease, and Service Franchise. These options highlight benefits like increased efficiency and improved customer service.

They also aim to mobilise private investment for modernising infrastructure and technology.

At the event, Jinapor praised the committee’s hard work. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to creating an environment for private investment in power.

He stressed that addressing inefficiencies is crucial to meet growing energy demand. “All we want is a reliable, affordable, and dependable supply of electricity,” he stated.

The report emphasizes the need for regulatory frameworks supporting private engagement. It also focuses on consumer protection and fair pricing mechanisms.

Strategic partnerships between government and private entities could introduce new technologies. This could transform the power distribution sector with innovative practices.

Mr Jinapor clarified that there are no plans to sell ECG or NEDCo. As discussions begin on implementing recommendations, he reiterated transparency and fairness.

He emphasized local content participation in building a sustainable energy sector that benefits all citizens.
