Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson is worried about Ghana's energy sector. The sector faces a significant financial burden.
In 2025, the government must pay $1.1 billion to ENI. This amount covers monthly invoices, LC replenishments, and outstanding arrears. Forson says this situation keeps him awake at night.
He shared on social media that critical obligations have been neglected for too long. This neglect has left the system broken and in urgent need of correction.
Despite these challenges, Forson assures Ghanaians that the government will not abandon its responsibilities. He emphasizes their commitment to stabilizing the sector and clearing inherited debts.
Ghana's energy sector is under immense financial strain. Monthly energy costs reach 2.5 billion cedis, while ECG collects only 1.3 billion cedis. This results in a shortfall of 1.2 billion cedis each month.
At a recent meeting with ENI officials, Forson expressed frustration over the situation. He noted that funds needed for development, healthcare, and education are now diverted to settle old debts.
The Finance Minister remains determined to address these issues head-on. He aims to ensure Ghana’s energy future is no longer affected by past poor decisions.
