The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU) has made a request to the government. They want enforcement of textile tax stamp and registration laws. This aims to prevent piracy by foreigners in the textile industry.
The ICU also urged the government to maintain the Zero Value Added Tax (VAT) Exemption. This exemption is crucial for sustaining operations of local textile companies.
In 2022, the Ministry of Trade and Industry launched its Textile Tax Stamp policy. They announced that from November 1, 2022, textile dealers must affix stamps to their products. These stamps certify the legitimacy of textiles produced, imported, or sold in the country.
Mr. Morgan Ayawine, General Secretary of ICU, spoke at their regional conference in Tema yesterday. He explained that their appeal to the government stems from challenges faced by local textile companies.
